Commonwealth Games 2022 – Publishing

PPL was appointed to design, print and sell the official Games’ Preview Magazine, the Opening Ceremony Programme, a Souvenir programme and the Closing Ceremony programme for the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham.

Working closely with members of the editorial and marketing teams at the CWG, programmes were illustrated with exciting action photography to enhance the readership and add impact to the features.

Production & Print – meeting timings:
• Page plans and production schedules were prepared in advance showing feature and advert positions.
• Editorial, production and printing deadlines were defined.
• A structure for creative and editorial flow was agreed upon.
• A commissioning editor was appointed and leading local and national journalists were commissioned to write the features.

Sales – PPL managed sales process:
• Sold the preview magazine into 450 retail outlets nationwide
• Sold in the venues using a team of locally employed personnel, branded booths, PDQ machines and branded workwear.
• All publications sold via PPL’s mail-order website
• Hospitality and complimentary publications were delivered.
• Advertising was sold in the preview magazine and programmes, with market exclusions considered and all adverts approved.

PPL delivered substantial sales and profits for the Commonwealth Games organising committee. We also played a part in positively attributing to other targets including, employing 85 sales personnel, creating an economic benefit locally and contributing to sustainability targets by using Green accredited printers, FSC-sourced paper, and low levels of recycling.
