We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Michael Bonallack OBE, Britain’s most decorated amateur golfer who died at the age of 88 on September 26th 2023.

Sir Michael won the Amateur Championships an impressive five times and claimed the Silver Medal as the leading amateur at The Open on two occasions; he served as secretary of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews from 1984-1999 and then as the club’s captain from 1999-2000.

At The PPL Group, Sir Michael was a Director from October 2001 to January 2006. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in supporting PPL’s Golf business. The Group has a long association with the R&A, has been proudly publishing The Open programme for over 70 years and involved in staging The Open for the last 42 years.

Carl Biggs, Director at PPL, expressed his condolences, stating, “We are deeply saddened to hear of Sir Michael’s passing. I had the privilege of working with Sir Michael as a client and then as a colleague; his wisdom and guidance have been invaluable. “
